QuickBooks Error 6000 77

Free Step-By-Step Fix Guide

QuickBooks Error 6000 77 appears when the software cannot access the company file due to permission restrictions, incorrect hosting configuration, or a damaged network data file. It is one of the most common multi-user access errors in QuickBooks Desktop.

Difficulty: Intermediate
Time To Fix: 20-35 minutes
Success Rate: 70% resolve with these steps

Before You Start — Try This First

  • Confirm you are logged into Windows as an Administrator
  • Check the company file location
  • Make sure server is running
  • Ask all users to log out of QuickBooks before you begin

Step-by-Step Fix

Step 1

Delete .ND File

Navigate to your company file folder. Find the file named exactly like your company file but with .ND extension. Example: CompanyName.QBW.ND. Delete this file — it will recreate automatically when QuickBooks opens. Try opening your company file again.

Step 2

Run QuickBooks File Doctor

QuickBooks Tool Hub → Company File Issues → Run QuickBooks File Doctor → Select your company file → Check your file and network → Allow full scan to complete

Step 3

Check Folder Permissions

Right click your company file folder → Properties → Security tab → Make sure these have Full Control: Your Windows username, QBDataServiceUserXX, Administrators group. If any are missing click Edit → Add

Step 4

Fix Hosting Settings

On SERVER computer only: QuickBooks → File → Utilities → Host Multi-User Access → ON. On EVERY WORKSTATION: QuickBooks → File → Utilities → Stop Hosting Multi-User Access

Step 5

Add Windows Firewall Exceptions

Control Panel → Windows Defender Firewall → Allow an app through firewall → Add QuickBooks Desktop. Also add QuickBooksDBXX service

Step 6

Rename Company File Temporarily

Make a copy of your company file → Rename the copy slightly → Try opening the renamed copy → If it opens the original filename has a conflict

Step 7

Run QuickBooks as Administrator

Close QuickBooks completely → Right click QuickBooks icon → Run as Administrator → Try opening company file again

Did these steps fix your error?

Yes

Make sure all users have correct Windows permissions to prevent this recurring.

No

Error 6000 77 that persists after permission fixes usually means the company file itself has damage that needs expert recovery.
