Before You Start — Try This First

  • Identify which computer is your designated server or host
  • Ask ALL users to fully exit QuickBooks
  • Do not attempt to open the file from multiple computers simultaneously
  • Have administrator access ready

Step-by-Step Fix

Step 1

Close QuickBooks on All Machines

Every user must fully close QuickBooks. File → Exit QuickBooks. Confirm in Task Manager no QB processes are still running.

Step 2

Fix Hosting on Server

Go to your SERVER computer only: QuickBooks → File → Utilities → If it says 'Stop Hosting Multi-User Access' — hosting IS on. Leave it. If it says 'Host Multi-User Access' — click it to turn ON hosting.

Step 3

Fix Hosting on Workstations

Go to EACH workstation: QuickBooks → File → Utilities → If it says 'Stop Hosting Multi-User Access' — click it to STOP hosting. Only the server should host.

Step 4

Restart QuickBooks Database Server Manager

On the server computer: Press Windows + R → services.msc → Find QuickBooksDBXX → Right click → Restart. Wait 30 seconds → Try opening company file again.

Step 5

Delete .ND and .TLG Files

Navigate to company file folder → Delete these two files: CompanyName.QBW.ND and CompanyName.QBW.TLG. They will recreate automatically. Open QuickBooks and try again.

Step 6

Move Company File

Copy company file to a different folder on the server → Update QuickBooks to point to new location. File → Open or Restore Company → Browse to new location.

Step 7

Run QuickBooks File Doctor

QuickBooks Tool Hub → Company File Issues → Run QuickBooks File Doctor → Select company file → Check both file and network → Full scan.
