QuickBooks Error 6123

Free Step-By-Step Fix Guide

QuickBooks Error 6123 appears when the connection between your workstation and the server is interrupted while the company file is open or being accessed. It is one of the most disruptive errors because it can appear suddenly during normal work and may leave the file in an inconsistent state.

Difficulty: Intermediate
Time To Fix: 20-35 minutes
Success Rate: 70% resolve with these steps

Before You Start — Try This First

  • Do not force close QuickBooks if it is currently frozen
  • Wait 2 minutes for it to respond before taking action
  • Check your network connection first
  • Note if this happened during a specific action like saving or backup

Step-by-Step Fix

Step 1

Wait and Retry

If QuickBooks is frozen → wait 3 minutes → close normally if possible. Restart QuickBooks → Try opening company file → Often resolves itself after a temporary network glitch

Step 2

Restart Network Equipment

Turn off router and network switch → Wait 60 seconds → Turn back on → Wait for full restart → Try QuickBooks. This clears temporary network errors

Step 3

Delete .ND and .TLG Files

Navigate to company file folder. Delete: CompanyName.QBW.ND and CompanyName.QBW.TLG. These recreate automatically. Try opening company file again

Step 4

Run QuickBooks File Doctor

QuickBooks Tool Hub → Company File Issues → Run QuickBooks File Doctor → Select company file → Run both file and network check → Full scan

Step 5

Verify and Rebuild Data

Open company file if possible → File → Utilities → Verify Data → If errors found → File → Utilities → Rebuild Data → Follow prompts

Step 6

Restore Most Recent Backup

If company file is inaccessible: File → Open or Restore Company → Restore a Backup Copy → Choose your most recent backup before the error appeared

Step 7

Move Company File Location

Copy company file to a new folder → Try opening from new location → Sometimes the original folder path has a conflict causing 6123
