QuickBooks Error 6150

Free Step-By-Step Fix Guide

QuickBooks Error 6150 usually appears after a failed restore, incomplete upgrade, or when the company file is seriously damaged. It means QuickBooks cannot read the internal structure of your file correctly.

Difficulty: Advanced
Time to Fix: 30-60 minutes
Success Rate: 50% resolve with these steps

Before You Start — Try This First

  • Do NOT attempt multiple restores — this can make damage worse
  • Do NOT delete your original file
  • Locate ALL backup copies you have
  • Note when the error first appeared

Step-by-Step Fix

Step 1

Try Opening a Portable File

In QuickBooks go to: File → Open or Restore Company → Open a Company File → Look for a .QBM file (portable file) instead of your .QBW company file

Step 2

Run QuickBooks File Doctor

Download QuickBooks Tool Hub → Company File Issues → Run QuickBooks File Doctor → Select your company file → Let it run completely (up to 10 mins)

Step 3

Restore an Older Backup

File → Open or Restore Company → Restore a Backup Copy → Try your second most recent backup — the most recent may already be corrupted

Step 4

Copy File to Desktop

Copy your company file (.QBW) directly to your Desktop. Try opening it from there. Sometimes the file path causes this error.

Step 5

Verify File Extension

Make sure your file ends in .QBW not .QBB or .QBM. Right click → Properties → Check file type. Rename if necessary.

Step 6

Try Opening on Another Computer

Copy the file to a USB drive and try opening it on a completely different computer with QuickBooks installed. If it opens there, the issue is your original computer's installation.

Step 7

Reinstall QuickBooks

Uninstall QuickBooks completely → Restart computer → Reinstall fresh from official Intuit website → Try opening your company file again
