Step-by-Step Fix

Step 1

Verify Payroll Subscription

Go to: Employees → My Payroll Service → Account/Billing Information → Confirm your subscription is Active and payment method is current

Step 2

Update Billing Information

Log in to your Intuit account at accounts.intuit.com → Billing → Update your payment method → Save changes → Return to QuickBooks and try payroll update again

Step 3

Run QuickBooks as Administrator

Close QuickBooks completely → Right click QuickBooks icon → Run as Administrator → Try the payroll update again

Step 4

Manually Download Payroll Update

In QuickBooks go to: Employees → Get Payroll Updates → Download Entire Update → Update (instead of automatic update)

Step 5

Toggle QuickBooks to Single User

File → Switch to Single-User Mode → Try the payroll update again in single user mode

Step 6

Clear Junk Files

Close QuickBooks → Navigate to C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks\Components\Payroll → Delete all files in this folder → Reopen QuickBooks and update payroll

Step 7

Temporarily Disable Antivirus

Some antivirus programs block payroll downloads. Temporarily disable your antivirus → Try payroll update → Re-enable antivirus after update completes
