Step-by-Step Fix

Step 1

Check Subscription Status

Employees → My Payroll Service → Account/Billing Information → Confirm subscription shows Active. Check expiry date is not passed. Check payment method is current

Step 2

Re-enter Your Service Key

Employees → Payroll → Enter Service Key → Delete the existing key → Re-type it carefully from your original service key document → Save and try payroll update again

Step 3

Check for Duplicate Subscriptions

Log into your Intuit account at accounts.intuit.com → Subscriptions → Look for duplicate payroll subscriptions → Cancel any duplicates keeping only the active one

Step 4

Update Billing Information

accounts.intuit.com → Billing → Update payment method → Make sure billing address matches your card exactly → Save → Return to QuickBooks and try again

Step 5

Run as Administrator

Close QuickBooks → Right click QuickBooks icon → Run as Administrator → Employees → Get Payroll Updates → Download Entire Update

Step 6

Toggle to Single User Mode

File → Switch to Single-User Mode → Try payroll update in single user → If it works switch back to multi-user

Step 7

Repair QuickBooks Installation

Control Panel → Programs and Features → QuickBooks → Repair → Follow repair wizard → Restart computer → Try payroll subscription again
