QuickBooks Error 12007

Free Step-By-Step Fix Guide

QuickBooks Error 12007 appears when the software cannot connect to the internet to download updates or access online services. This is almost always caused by your firewall or security software blocking QuickBooks internet access, incorrect Internet Explorer proxy settings, or an unstable internet connection at the time of the update.

Difficulty: Beginner to Intermediate
Time to Fix: 15-25 minutes
Success Rate: 80% resolve with these steps

Before You Start — Try This First

  • Confirm your internet is working by opening a website in your browser
  • Check if any other programs can access the internet normally
  • Note if this started after a Windows update or new antivirus installation

Step-by-Step Fix

Step 1

Check Internet Connection

Open your browser → Go to any website → If it does not load your internet is the problem → Restart router → Wait 2 minutes → Try again

Step 2

Configure Internet Explorer

QuickBooks uses Internet Explorer for internet access even if you use Chrome or Firefox: Open Internet Explorer → Tools → Internet Options → Connections tab → LAN Settings → Make sure 'Automatically detect settings' is checked → Uncheck proxy server unless you specifically use one → Click OK → Try QuickBooks update

Step 3

Add Firewall Exceptions

Control Panel → Windows Defender Firewall → Allow an app through firewall → Make sure these are allowed: QuickBooks Desktop, QBUpdate.exe, QBW32.exe. If not listed click Allow another app and add them manually

Step 4

Temporarily Disable Antivirus

Some antivirus programs block QuickBooks internet access: Temporarily disable your antivirus → Try the QuickBooks update → If it works add QuickBooks as a permanent antivirus exception → Re-enable antivirus

Step 5

Flush DNS Cache

Open Command Prompt as administrator: Type: ipconfig /flushdns → Enter. Type: ipconfig /release → Enter. Type: ipconfig /renew → Enter. Close Command Prompt → Try update

Step 6

Reset Internet Explorer

Open Internet Explorer → Tools → Internet Options → Advanced → Reset → Confirm → Restart computer → Try QuickBooks update again

Step 7

Run as Administrator

Close QuickBooks → Right click icon → Run as Administrator → Help → Update QuickBooks Desktop → Update Now
